- Stichting Kumasi wil natuurlijk foto’s en filmpjes mee naar huis nemen om iedereen te laten zien wat er met hun centjes of spulletjes is gebeurd.
Als wij resultaten van projecten mee willen nemen naar Nederland is het zaak om zo snel mogelijk te beginnen met de onderhandelingen en het kopen van materialen.
De directeur van de Calvary school is er wel aan gewend en weet onmiddellijk hoe de zaken aangepakt moeten worden.
- Hostel Calvary school De school is tevens een Hostel geworden. Het zag er wat rommelig uit, maar de gedachte achter het Hostel is prima. De jongeren hebben thuis geen elektriciteit dus het studeren houdt om 18.00 uur. Bovendien hebben ze enkel voor de nacht een slaapplekje samen met de hele familie. Vaak moeten de jongeren na school thuis meehelpen en komen niet aan studeren toe. Er hangt een rooster in de school om afwisselend de jongeren een slaapplaats aan te bieden. Zij wonen dus op school. Een leslokaal is voor de meisjes, een leslokaal voor de docenten en een leslokaal voor de jongens. Zo is er ook toezicht en kunnen de jongeren zelfs ’s avonds bijles krijgen.
- Schoolkantine Rondom de school is een levendige beweging gaande. Zo is er een schoolkantine, zoals zij dat zelf noemen. Om de beurten komen de leerlingen het eerst aan de beurt. Als je als buitenstaander voor het eerst op de Calvary school komt lijkt het een ongeorganiseerde chaos. Gaandeweg zie je structuren en is er wel degelijk een organisatie.

Vanaf het begin van het Ekon, een armoedige wijk van Cape-Coast, is er al veel gedaan. In 2005 was er een kleine bouwval met 3 klassen. Daar moesten ong. 180 kinderen onderwijs krijgen van 4 tot 18 jaar. Er was geen enkele sanitaire voorziening in Ekon. De stranden, kliffen en de bosjes werden gebruikt om te poepen en te plassen. Zoals we weten staan toiletten op de eerste plaats in de ontwikkeling van derde wereldlanden, daarna onderwijs. Sinds vorig jaar mei staat er toiletgebouw bij de school. Deze was in gebruik maar nog lang niet af. Het toiletgebouw oogt klein maar is in feite een groot project. Veel intensiever en duurder dan een compleet schoolgebouw.
In het oude gebouw is de basisschool gevestigd. In het nieuwe gebouw met 3 klaslokalen zit de middelbare school met 80 jongeren tussen de 12 en 18 jaar. De regering heeft de namen veranderd van de middelbare scholen. De JSS (Junior Secundairy school) heet sinds kort Junior High School (JHS). Deze bestaat uit 3 schooljaren. Dit is een algemene basisvorming waar je allerlei vakken krijgt. De leeftijd is van 12 tot 18 jaar. Er zijn nog 2 lokalen in aanbouw. Bij aankomst hebben we een verassingsbezoek gebracht. De toiletten (gaten in de grond) waren smerig en stonken, dus bij de onderhandelingen komt een plan hoe de toiletten te onderhouden. Het thema “hygiëne ”is ingebed in de voorlichtingsactiviteiten voor de jongeren. Mr. Afful zal een rooster gaan maken hoe de sanitaire voorzieningen hygiënisch te houden in de toekomst.
Eigen initiatieven van de Calvary school in 2012
Veel projecten van de “blanken” komen in een diep dal wanneer ze weer naar huis gaan. Dat is bij ons project niet het geval. De Directeur van de Calvary school is nog steeds een zeer betrouwbare partner gebleken. 18 maanden geleden hebben wij hem medegedeeld dat wij het zoeken naar geld hebben opgegeven en ze zich voor moeten bereiden dat het project stopt. Met de weinige centjes die de school zelf bij elkaar schraapt worden eigen initiatieven ontwikkeld zoals het opkopen van de grond voor de uitbreiding van de school, het leggen van de funderingen, de schoolkantine, het hostel, Dit is waar ontwikkelingsgeld voor bedoeld is. De mensen nemen zelf initiatieven. Stichting Kumasi is super tevreden wat er allemaal gedaan is en hoe het gaat. Om een school bij de overheid te registreren zijn toiletten een vereiste. In 2011 is de Calvary school begonnen met dit proces. In de laatste fase moet de gemeente Cape-Coast de school nog officieel registreren in Accra. Dit soort officiële processen duren erg lang maar de Directeur laat ook hier niets liggen.

Het afbouwen van het toiletgebouw

De overloop (suckaway) is een tweede put wat dient om het overtollige water van de eerste put onder het toiletgebouw te laten overlopen. Wat overblijft onder het toiletgebouw zijn de reststoffen van de poep. Deze tweede put moest nog afgegraven worden, daarna zijn de stenen gebakken om het hele gat van binnen af te bouwen. Er zitten twee compartimenten in de “Suck-away”. Daarna is de put dicht gemaakt met cement. Er zitten betonnen deksels om het open te kunnen maken indien nodig. In het toiletgebouw zijn alle 6 ruimtes betegeld. Er staan nu 4 echte wc’s. Dit is een ongekende luxe. De andere 2 ruimtes zijn badruimtes. Voor het toiletpapier komen er 4 plastic afval containers die goed sluiten om de hygiëne te waarborgen. Ik wist niet dat er zoveel bij kwam kijken. Nu begrijp ik dat er niet zomaar overal toiletten zijn in derde wereldlanden.Voorlichtingen Seksuele Gezondheid
Het programma “Wijzer in de Liefde” is zoals elk jaar gepland. Dit programma omvat een aantal thema’s (zie vorige jaren) en is geheel vernieuwd. Het zijn niet alleen PowerPoint presentaties maar ook Engelstalige animatiefilms over onder andere hiv, zwangerschap en bevalling, functie en werking van ons lichaam. Dit is een groot succes geworden. Ik heb nu op een grote overheidsschool aan de andere kant van Ekon seksuele voorlichting gegeven en merk het verschil met de jongeren van de Calvary school. Deze jongeren praten veel gemakkelijker over seksualiteit. Mijn collega verpleegkundige Lydia van het “Ekon health centre” vertelde dat het aantal tienerzwangerschappen van de schoolgaande jeugd in Ekon de laatste 2 jaar is afgenomen. Onder de kinderen die niet naar school gaan is het aantal tienerzwangerschappen nog hoog, maar deze jongeren zijn moeilijk te bereiken. Dat is een project op zich!!!Ook voorlichting op de Ekon Metropolitan Assembly Junior High school
Deze school ligt aan de andere kant van Ekon, ongeveer 20 minuten verder naar beneden lopen (richting het strand). Op verzoek van de PPAG (Planned Parenthood Association of Ghana) http://www.ppag-gh.org/ en het Ekon Health centre is ook daar het programma “Seksuele Gezondheid” gegeven. De directeur van de PPAG was aangenaam verrast en wil het programma ook zelf gaan gebruiken. De school bestaat uit de JHS en SHS. Samen zijn er honderden leerlingen op school. De bedoeling dat ik samen met twee docenten de voorlichting verzorg. Dit wordt een hele kluif. De klassen tellen 50 leerlingen. Jongens en meisjes apart. Met mijn boodschappenwagen vol apparatuur naar het strand (waar de school staat). Natuurlijk kon het niet uitblijven dat ik gevraagd werd om donaties te geven om de daken van de school te repareren. Er zitten overal gaten in het dak. Helaas is het stichtingsgeld al besteedt. Bovendien is dit een overheidsschool. Deze moet de school onderhouden.
Voortgang project Train de Trainer
Dit project is moeilijk te realiseren. Het gaat erom dat de leerkrachten getraind worden om zelf de voorlichtingen “Seksuele Gezondheid” te geven. Ik weet van de Nederlandse scholen dat dit zelfs bij ons op de scholen regelmatig niet lukt. Vroeger kwam de GGD op de scholen. Nu moeten de leerkrachten dit zelf doen. Zij kunnen het programma aanschaffen via de GGD. Als docent om te praten over seksualiteit met de jongeren is iets heel anders dan als verpleegkundige van buitenaf. In Ghana is het precies hetzelfde. Ze willen allemaal meedoen, maar als het puntje bij het paaltje komt geven ze niet thuis. Volgend jaar gaat dit project gewoon weer verder. Uitbreiding Calvary school
Het gaat om twee lokalen die op de top van de heuvel staan. De school had zelf al een fundering gelegd. In de toekomst gaan deze lokalen aansluiten op de school beneden.. Op het laatste lokaal beneden komt een tweede verdieping en deze sluit aan bij de twee lokalen op de top van de heuvel. Als je er zelf niet bent geweest is het moeilijk uitleggen. Stichting Kumasi heeft letterlijk haar steentjes bijgedragen.Project nieuwe schoolbanken
Erg hard nodig zijn schoolbanken. De kinderen zitten vaak met vieren op een bankje voor twee leerlingen. Er worden 25 nieuwe hardhouten schoolbanken gemaakt. Je kunt ze kant en klaar kopen maar onze stichting is een voorstander om werkers aan te trekken uit de directe omgeving. Iedereen tevreden. De timmerman en zijn knechtjes hebben de laatste jaren al veel projecten gedaan voor de school. Soms voor heel weinig geld. De werktafel die de timmerman gemaakt heeft wordt straks gebruikt als vergadertafel voor de leerkrachten. Het afvalhout wordt gebruikt voor de schoolkantine.Project ZONGO
In het centrum van Cape Coast in de arme wijk Zongo staat een gebouw wat er erg bouwvallig uitziet. Dit gebouw doet dienst als basisschool voor de kinderen, maar is tevens een ontmoetingscentrum en dient ook nog als een wijkgebouw. Vorig jaar zijn we begonnen met een klein stukje restauratie van het dak. Er moet nog veel gedaan worden. Andere delen van het dak zijn gerestaureerd . De houten ramen zijn vervangen en behandeld met houtprotectie.Goederen uit Holland
Namens iedereen die iets gekregen heeft uit de zeecontainer die we hebben verscheept vanuit Nederland: hartelijk dank. Fietsen, rolstoelen, computers, laptops en vele andere zaken die Nederlanders gedoneerd hebben een tweede leven gekregen.met dank aan het Revalidatiecentrum Blixembosch te Eindhoven
